Purchase and install a Hub/Router to use as extra protection (firewall) between PC and Internet connections

Purchase and Install Anti-Virus Software – some viruses disable virus software, so beware and update definitions often

An ISP that scans for viruses, in addition to a local virus scanner, is safer for you

PC running slower than normal? Getting annoying pop ups? Go to, www.safer-networking.org – download “Spybot Search & Destroy”. This software download is updated periodically. Running this software on the PC will find and remove spy ware from the hard drive. Update, Scan, Repair.

In addition to running Spybot, www.lavasoftusa.com provides a free download called “Ad-Aware” that is updated frequently. This software removes the spy ware that is added to PCs when visiting websites, gathering cookies, etc. Update, Scan, Repair.

Do not click on links attached to the bottom of pages sent to you from friends or on advertisements. These links are spy ware and attach tracking mechanisms to your emails and leave a trail of where you have been on the net

Be careful of any downloads offered

When in doubt… opt out by typing “Ctrl – F4”. These key strokes allow you to close the active window without responding to an application

Microsoft does not send e-mail with attachments to their customers from “staff@microsoft.com” or any other name… most likely, it’s a virus

Receiving e-mails with attachments from friends can also be dangerous. Give them a quick call or e-mail and ask if they’ve sent you something before attempting to open the e-mail

Previewing an e-mail is the same as opening the e-mail. Close the “Preview Pane” on your e-mail in-boxes
